- Our Island Story By Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall
It was December 2019 when I first came across this children’s book on the Internet. I didn’t make a note of the circumstances of my discovery. I just recorded the find in my Google Keep $audiobook category and forgot about it. I didn’t rediscover it until August 2020 during the Corona virus lockdown. I was tidying up and reorganising my Google Keep archive and decided to listen to Kara Shallanberg’s reading of the book on LibriVox. It turned out that Kara (aka. #kayray) is an wonderful reader with a clear, steady style perfect for this kind of genre. I sat for several hours listening to and enjoying the stories written for children by Henrietta Marshall at the turn of the 20th century. The stories themselves are short, engaging and informative and are perfect for young children and adults alike.
Our Island Story is available as a free ebook on archive.org but I recommend listening to Kara Shallanberg’s rendition of the book on LibriVox. You can even use the LibriVox subscribe by iTunes feature to stream the stories to your iPhone which is exactly what I did.
Kara Shallanberg has her own website kayray.org where she shares more poems, stories and audiobooks alongside recipes, knitting patterns, and some personal blog posts. Kara has recorded many audiobooks including some of my favourite stories including C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings. I can’t wait to listen to them.
